The borders on your whitewash are really rough and angular; try softening them up a little with a tool like smudge. (don't actually use smudge, the last time I opened Photoshop was 2009, I'm sure there's an actual good tool)
After that:
Try adding some shadow near the top of the eyes. Take a look at the picture in your icon -- notice how there's some gradient to her eyes , even in the whites, where the top 33% or so are slightly more grey? Bring that to a whitewash, and maybe add a couple motes of brighter-than-your-white white (and indeed start duller if possible) -- this gives your whitewash some texture and slickness. Rather than being flat to the point of fitting in poorly with the picture, it becomes glassy. It lets nothing in, and reflects everything. I might go searching for a couple pics that have good whitewash eyes if that's your thing and you need better examples.
Honesty I just wanna try a lot of things and see what I'm best at. My personal favorite to look at, no matter how cartoonish, is probably spiral eyes, yet I do not see myself doing them.

Here we go. Notice how there's some shadow at the top of the eye, and how that gives it some texture?

I will keep your advice in mind.
