(Keeping in mind I know nothing about this series) how is this mind control?
The main villain of the show, Hawk Moth, utilizes magical butterflies called "Akuma" to to corrupt people who are experiencing extreme negative emotions into supervillains and make them do his bidding (specifically, to capture the magic baubles of the main characters) in exchange for powers and the chance for revenge against those who have wronged them. It's explicitly shown to be a form of corruption and mental domination, and if the villain fucks around for too long, Hawk Moth will exert more dominance to force them to get to taking the main characters' Miraculous.

That sounds about accurate. It's not ground-breaking by any stretch but it's fun as hell, which makes me said when it will eventually get heavy and emo.
