I'm going to admit to never having read them, but I heard that the original japanese novels that the Ring movies are based on had more of a sci-fi focus than a horror focus. Like there's more about how Sadako was some kind of weird psychic when she was "alive," and all her ghost powers get a psuedo-science-y explanation via being some kind of biokinesis.

From what I've heard in the last book in the series Sadako has become some kind of sentient network of cancer cells that has killed most of humanity, and the story is about people stuck in some vr sim that's supposed to make someone figure out a cure for her.

Like I said, never read them, but it seems to me like the movie made a smart choice in focusing more on the killer ghost/horror angle.
