Owing to Rule 34
It is well known that how much rule 34 a property generates is a good indicator of its pop culture success.
Just ask Pomni.
But with some characters, that pop culture relevance flows FROM rule 34 rather than TO rule 34. I have often wondered if some older characters continue to stay in the consciousness because they continue to be a muse for rule 34 artists and would have faded into obscurity without them?
One example that leaps to my mind is Gadget Hackwrench.

What about you? What are some older character YOU think would have faded away by now without their presence in rule 34?

Honestly? Kim Possible and Totally Spies. Without R34 nobody would be talking about those. Penny Gadget too.

The best example has to be the Hex Maniac, who wasn't even really a character before 34 got a hold of her. Now she's so popular, Pokemon Masters actually made her playable.

I see this with MANY sonic charaters.
I think outside of the very hardcore fanbase, charaters like honey the cat or marine the recoon would be COMPLETELY forgotten or obscure if rule 34 of them just stopped being made.
