Really? 4 was my favorite of the series thus far for the oddly beautiful love story it has between Chief and Cortana. <<
www.escapistmagazine.com/...g-to-master-chiefs-story/|There was a great article from The Escapist>> last year that articulated my thoughts so perfectly as to why it was my favorite. Plus the score, while not as iconic as Marty's work in the previous installments, still had a real kick to laying down the emotional and exciting moments.
I think my general issues are...
1. I tend to dislike when a series meets a good conclusion, but keeps going. I'm fine if you continue IN UNIVERSE, but when you keep the old characters in a whole new adventure it feels... wrong.
For example, I'm fine with games like GTA, where each game can be played separately, and exists as it's own entity. I'm also fine with things like Mass Effect: Andromeda, since we are no longer following Shepard.
The issue is that Halo 3 reached a conclusion of the war. 4 pulled in this whole mess of new stuff, but with Chief still in the driver's seat. It just felt so wrong to me. And honestly, after watching a playthrough of 5's campaign... the story kind of bothers me generally.
2. I just can't play multiplayer games anymore. Co-op is a different story, but playing online multiplayer stresses me out. People take it WAY too seriously. If I wanted to get screeched at, I'd call my mom. I play video games to relax, and having people shriek into my ears like fucking banshees because "YOU TOOK MY ENERGY SWOOOOORD!" is not relaxing to me.
3. I also don't really like the way in which Halo multiplayer evolved. I sort of had this issue in Reach, but things like Armor Lock, Jetpack, Hologram, etc always kinda rubbed me the wrong way.
What I liked in 1-3 was how everyone was put on a level playing field, and the combat was made more savage because it was all about making do with limited resources. You couldn't just spawn in with camo or plasma grenades (outside of custom game types). You had to find those things, and use them to your advantage from where you found them. Just being able to spawn with them, use them repeatedly, etc removed the fun for me. I have similar issues with things like Overwatch, where your character is extremely limited, and to change things up you basically need to switch characters instead of just modifying tactics on the fly by grabbing a different weapon.
