I'm not very far in (I wasn't aware of the game, but it seemed interesting) But there is a Forum where people discuss Rag games and trade Tips, and they seem to have worked out the section you have problems with.

There is apparently a lot of randomness and Trial and error involved too.

I hate to be "that guy" but have you tried the tips and tricks forum for Mindshift? There's probably a whole lot more there than we could go into here without asking specifics.
