Riot IM chat?
I wonder if anyone is interested into have a fully featured chat system that works on web (like Discord, minus company policies and anyone can own its private server; plus is open source).
Similar to irc it's not required registration and anyone can host a server, but unlikely irc:
- server are federated (so hypnohub domain itself could host a sever: and everyone would be still able to contact everyone inside/outside: with irc you need to keep multiple irc.server open across all your friends)
- you can upload images/video and have preview in both web and Android/iOS app
- voice and video calls (web and app)

is someone want to test it out; I've made a generic hypno channel:
riot.im/app/#/room/#hypno:matrix.org
the "riot.im/app/#/room/" in the url is just for the web app, if you're on the app (web/android or iOS) already you just need #hypno:matrix.org

matrix.org federated server already integrate some irc server, unlucky eris server are not yet on list; otherwise from the same app you could even join hypnohub irc channel with something like: #EFnet_#hypnohub:matrix.org

I've made a dummy #hypnohub channel on freenode just for those who want to test it out:
riot.im/app/#/room/#freenode_#hypnohub:matrix.org
webchat interface for freenode is: webchat.freenode.net/

You can join that irc channel from irc (text, file exchange and whatever irc does, as usual) *and* video/voice chat with those who are connected through riot (file upload will stored on matrix.org server). Anyway when in irc you see someone with "[m]" at their nickname tail; they are mostly probably using riot-matrix already :)

Just notice that, when from riot, you can't see who's online on irc tho (I guess they are still working on it) like you can for riot users; but, once the irc channel is federated, it keep the history log for whatever is said (so, you can guess from the timestamp how much time is past before someone said it's last thing)

this seems intresting, but why not just create a regular ircd? I got a few boxes lying around if you need

Irc has been a great technology coming from the '80 when most pc...I mean "terminal" were monochrome. Now it's show off its age. You have no reliable way for a buddy list, no preview on link, no voice or video chat. Also each server is a separate isle: if you have a friend on a channel on another server that you want contact while on #hypnohub... you can't.

You just have to connect up to each server where your friend are: a single room to chat among all your friend? Good luck!

Riot/Matrix is federated; communication works like emails: if you have a friend in #hypno:matrix.org and another on #hub:hypnohub.net... you're always in touch with everyone.
the hash "#" is for the rooms and the "@" for the users.

ie: if someone wants to connect directly with me. it actually can: @aakord:matrix.org ... no matter which server you're into.
