What's a good RTS game for someone new to RTS?
Title says it all.

I've been wanting to get into Real Time Strategy games recently but I'm not sure where to start. The only real strategy games I've played were Halo wars (which was fun, but limited) and turn based SRPG's like Disgaea and Valkyria Chronicles. What do you guys think would be a good entry for someone new to the RTS genre?

Command & Conquer series would be a good start. (Red Alert 2 YR is still one of my all time favourites.)

Dawn of War - Series, especially for 40k fans

Star Wars Empire at War + Forces of Corruption add-on (a long, long time ago before dlc... q_q) is also a great game. Since its pausable at any time and features easy (some might say superficial) 4x elements its also good for starters of RTS-games.

I'd recommend going for Command & Conquer Red Alert 2, or Tiberium Wars. There's a lot of depth to get into, but the easy AI is actually braindead, so you can actually screw around with it.

Also the modding scene is amazing.

I'm a die hard broodwar fan, so... Starcraft: Brood War ... yeah. C&C is also a great place to start, and I've heard tons of great things about C&C Generals. Maybe Supreme Commander while you're at it, but I haven't tried that.

Triple:
command and conquer has a huge series of really good games (red alert 2 had mindcontrol the expention revolved around mind control)

The original world of Warcraft games were good I don't really remember them It was long ago

There's the earth 2100 games the first two got really complicated fast but the third one was decent in that till you met the new team introduced in it who were overpowered

I played gray goo not that long ago it was fun and the learning curve wasn't that high till you got to the end and it spikes imencely at the end the teams do look suspiciously like the third earth games teams

The supreme commander games were pure bliss with massive army's but it was never to complex to play in my eyes the first game and second game played completely diffent tech wise both were really good games

Sorry for the wall of text I love RTS >_<.... And amys

Halo wars is the perfect starter. really simple, easy. good thing you started with that.
the total war series is decent, Empire at War is a great one (especially for star wars fans), and starcraft is my personal favorite. but don't go online. it's... brutal. anything made by blizzard is that way, actually.
I haven't ever really played command and conquer, so I can't comment on that.
Ashes of the singularity is okay but gets sort of needlessly complex later on.
Another favorite is Warhammer 40k dawn of war 2. very simple, and you can see where halo wars took inspiration from it.
definitely steer clear of Age of Empires or Anno if you're inexperienced. they can kind of trounce newer players easily.

Oh boy, RTS. My worst genre. I'm TERRIBLE at these. But I can go ahead and recommend a few things anyway...

First, if you have a GameCube, Wii, or Wii U, I can recommend the Pikmin series. I've often heard them described as "gateway RTS games", being basically RTS games genre-wise yet with very little real macro, being mostly micro to varying degrees based on game. Pikmin 1 and 2 are both GameCube games, with cheaper New Play Control versions on Wii that turn the whole thing into Wiimote controls (no real opinion on which is better); Pikmin 3 is on Wii U (personally my least favorite of the bunch, but then again lots of people disagree with me on 2 being the best so take my recommendations with a grain of salt). The only real downside to this is that it doesn't have much multiplayer at all -- it's mostly singleplayer. But it's a good starting place if you like Nintendo games.

Then, for a PC RTS...well, I've gotta recommend StarCraft 2. It's basically THE RTS game. It's also the hardest, but if you're patient, you can learn a lot from the story mode at varying difficulty levels, the co-op mode (which is unbelievably fun), and possibly get into some proper multiplayer once you're done with the utter bullshit that is league placement. Just keep in mind that the three races lead to VASTLY different playstyles, so don't give up just because you tried Zerg and found it nigh on impossible (like me), just keep in mind that it doesn't play much at all like Protoss or Terran.

And on a related note, somebody above has already recommended Brood War (aka StarCraft 1 with all the DLC, as I understand it). This is...even harder than SC2, and has largely fallen out of the scene due to SC2 hitting mainstream, or at least that's how I understand it. But eh, if you want StarCraft but don't want SC2...why not? Just keep the above advice for SC2 in mind here too (use story mode to learn the races and get a feel for what you're good at before delving into multiplayer).

Brood War is still huge in Korea, where Starcraft play the iconic national sport. However, in the global scene, starcraft 1 has been dead for some time, and 2 is (sadly) following. That's thanks to Blizzard making some... well, frankly, shitty design and balance choices in HotS between WoL and LotV.
Spectating competitive play is boring as hell now, since most of the players with real personality have left, and the commentators/shoutcasters just have no life left in them.

As for Pikmin, I wouldn't call it an RTS per se. It's got some shared basic elements, but does not fit the genre at all. It's amazing regardless, definitely a favorite of mine.

I gotta know, are hellions still ridiculous? I dropped off of sc2 as heart came out.

Warcraft III is practically the quintessential RTS

thanks so much for the suggestions guys! I do have one other question though. Are there RTS games that focus on a grander scale? like instead of managing an army, you're managing the growth of an entire civilization? I know there's the Civilization game series but I was wondering if there were other titles that fit that description. Or am I thinking of a completely different genre?

well you have the Shogun series they focus both on RTS combat and growing your empire.

You also have the Iron Heart series, focusing on leading your country through WW1 and WW2.

You want grander scale? Well, there's grand strategy. Paradox's games like Europa Universalis IV or Crusader Kings II or Stellaris are considered disturbingly addictive from what I've heard, which is part of why I've opted never to fall into *that* particular hole. They're fairly complex stuff, but they're popular and people really like infecting others with them for some reason, so you can probably find something that'll get you started on Youtube.

Sounds like you want the Total War series. I personally prefer Starcraft 2 - or I did when I played it back in the WoL days - but Total war isn't bad. Age of Empires might fit the bill too, if you don't mind your games dated, a bit. Grand Strategy (i.e. Paradox) isn't RTS, as far as I know.

Well there's always the Age games like Age of Empires or Age of Mythology. Rise of Nations is a good alternative to the Age games, it has lots of nation and city building too. Also if you want Total War, personally I say go with Shogun 2.

Another good RTS that usually gets overshadowed by the more popular titles would be Impossible Creatures. Great if you want lots of customization options for your units.

And I never played it myself before but I hear the Company of Heroes games are really good.
