The Musical Thread
(If this has already been done before, if this belongs somewhere to another thread, or if you find this thread to be contrary to any guidelines, feel free to lock/delete this, mods.)

I saw we had a "Movies you just watched thread", and a bunch of threads about hypno in different media, and a "General Media News Thread", and probably some more I've forgotten, so on a whim, I decided ; hey, why not ? I like music, I love comparing my tastes to other peoples' and everything, and this Hub is slowly becoming a real community, so why not have a music thread ? Y'know, the stuff you like and the stuff you just discovered, something like that. After all, you don't really know someone till you know which music they listen to... or something.

So I guess the way this could go is, when posting your first post :
-Start by introducing your musical tastes (year/decade/century ? genre ? bands ? albums ? specific songs ?, etc.) ;
-And then talk about which piece of music you've discovered/listened to last.

Of course, these are just general guidelines, you're free to post as you wish, though let's at least keep it generally related to music for the sake of non-redundancy with the "Hello!" thread.

I'll start :
Though I have rather eclectic taste in music, I mostly like rock, and I mostly like rock from the twentieth century, particularly from the sixties to the nineties (though I don't really care too much for most of the eighties), and among those decades I mostly like either punk rock, hard rock, or progressive rock. My (current) favorite bands are Deep Purple, Bad Religion, The Clash, The Beatles, and some more modern ones like Arcade Fire or Muse (EDIT : forgot an important one, namely Pink Floyd). Pop, rap, jazz, blues, country and folk generally don't bother me, though my tastes are more limited.

Last great discovery ? The song "Culture War", from the deluxe edition of Arcade Fire's third album, The Suburbs.

I've been on a huge binge of Indie Rock for a while now, I used be more into Imagine Dragons, but now it's mostly Fallout Boy and Rise Against, with some Sixx.AM and random rock bands psrinkled in. I just personally don't like Rock and Rap, certain kinds of rap, but very, very specific kinds.
Last song I listened to Was Getting Away with Murder by Papa Roach.

That's awesome ! I've listened to and liked three out of those five. Rise Against, being at least somewhat punk rock, is probably my favorite, tho

I listen to all kinds of stuff, but I consided EDM to be my home range of genres. In particular, happy hardcore, hardstyle, the 'core' genres, eurobeat, hands up, all that good stuff, are what I hold closest to me in terms of what I gravitate to even under the EDM umbrella itself. However, I also still adore dubstep, drumstep, and that whole family of genres as a whole.

Some of what I suppose are my favorite EDM artists of all time are Da Tweekaz, S3RL, Zomboy, Feed Me, The Living Tombstone...I'm sure there are more, but I'm sleepy rn, and can't think of too many off the top of my head.

I'm also quite fond of video game music and nerdcore.

Can't remember the last thing I listened to

I got a lot of tastes in music myself, but growing up in south side chicago i had always mainly heard Rap and Mexican music, so thats really shaped my tastes (not to say i dont like other things, pretty much the only thing im not into a lot is metal) . Ive been really into Flatbush Zombies as of late, with their more trippy and slow style of rap, it really adds to their more drug-induced feeling they shoot for. I cant choose a favorite song, but I really enjoy their songs "Bounce" and "Palmtrees". Both songs hold an almost sinister and lucid feel that really put me in a trance with how calming they are, despite the themes of your average gangster rap but with a different twist.

You listen to S3RL too ? Dat's great, he isn't too known apart from the happy hardcore and rave circles. What's your favorite song from him ?

Appropriately... mine would probably be <<www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zHm77FkW3U|MTC>> (for those who don't know, that means Masturbate to Cartoons).

Hmm... In terms of rap, I myself have only "discovered" it recently. I started with the one everyone knows (Eminem). I guess I'm mainstream after all.

Lately I've been jamming on Red Vox, and their new album, Another Light, is gearing up to be nothing short of awesome.

I've also been listening to a bit of Whitey.

And overall, I do enjoy my classic rock.

I can't get Mungo Jerry's "In the Summertime" out of my head and it's very distracting...

Ahh, now that's one hell of an earworm. At least it's kind of enjoyable, though. I'd be more concerned if it was "Two Princes" by Spin Doctors---I swear that song is a scourge to human sanity conducted by Azathoth himself.

My music tastes are all over the place--I dabble in everything from classic rock, vaporwave, retrowave, chiptune, prog rock, classical, video game soundtracks, orchestral metal, '80s synth, hip hop and R&B, funk.....honestly, I think the only genre I really don't enjoy is country, but that's just personal taste, really.

We do have <<hypnohub.net/forum/show/9511|a thread about music tastes>> already, but IMO it's actually better to give big threads like this a fresh start every now and then - subject megathreads start kinda feeling a bit stuffy after being around for two or three years. You see all these posts by people who haven't been around recently, you see pages and pages of links to songs that would take days to listen through, etc.. It's just too much to feel like you're adding to anything by posting in it.

My music taste is best summed up as "human voices don't belong in music, but that dick-shaped waveform you just made with your synthesizer does". Here are some songs I've enjoyed over the years:

<<www.youtube.com/watch?v=3JrhRXrF5kI|In Mitra Medusa Inri - Nordlichter>>. Pretty straightforward darkwave from Germany, but this song in particular seems to somehow have kept my attention for months. And, okay, yeah, it has vocals, which is a strike against it, but I don't understand a word of them, and that seems to help.

<<www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bri4scR81-4|Stéphane Picq - Sign of the Worm>>. FM synthesis has absolutely broken my ears - I actually prefer the OPL3's warm roughness to <<www.youtube.com/watch?v=AM1niSBAIdE|the version on the soundtrack album>>.

<<www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbFcMnrRQq0|Michael Nyman - Miranda>>. This song cheats my brain - I'd heard <<www.youtube.com/watch?v=j8odeO46Nxk#t=55m5s|a slower version of it>> quite a few times before I ever heard this one, and it's weird how.... dynamic it feels, just by going a bit faster.

<<www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLrNOqYiBLI|ninetales - It's dark, raining, and the leaves certainly aren't done falling>>. I just felt like you needed another example of a song that does surprisingly much just by going a bit faster than you got used to thinking it should.

Aahhh darn it! With that name I thought this thread would be about musicals instead of music! Boo :p

I'm mostly into 80's and 90's rock thanks to my parents, with a special place in my heart for Alan Parson's Project and Queen. The first one always sounded magical and entrancing to me. The second, especially with Bohemian Rhapsody, awakened my love for singing and harmonies.

If you're into Alan Parson's Project music, I can also reccomend the Dire Straits' <<m.youtube.com/watch?v=y-xG44ExDwM|Private Investigations>>. While not a "new" discovery, just... give it a listen. Close your eyes, let your imagination carry you to 1940's Noir Detectives.

Aside from rock, I'm also into some pop and folk music (Owl City, Adele, Gaelic Storm, Floggin' Molly, ...) but whenever I listen I cannot not sing along if I know the songs. And I know a lot of songs, passively. These days I keep to instrumental gaming music and to me unknown Spotify playlists (aka play one to death until I start singing along, then move on to the next).

Yeah, it is enjoyable. The problem is though is that I can't sing along to it. There's something about the main singer's voice that I can't seem to copy (other than the fact that he's British and I'm not...) so the most I can do is hum along.

Fuck yeah, Alan Parsons Project is my jam. I was obsessed with their Eye in the Sky and Stereotomy albums in my teen years.
