Why is a lot of Japanese Erotic Hypnosis media so creepy?
I don't know why, but for whatever reason Hypnosis themed Hentai and Eroge tends to have non-sexy and predatory hypnotists, creepy music, and rape overtones; with the main focus not so much being the hypnosis but the idea that " 'Non-Consensual Sex is Harmless!' is a registered trademark of Aperture Science dba Aperture Laboratories ©1998 All Rights Reserved" Most of the hot hypnosis anime scenes I've...well...seen come from shows where hypnosis isn't the main theme.

Does anybody know why that is?

Mostly boils down to cultural differences.

If anything, it would be nice to see more adult games specifically involving hypnosis that can be genuinely sweet over creepy. Like hypnosis is something you can use with your willing partner, rather than some ability to get with people. I figure how the latter is probably more popular/desired, but eh, one can only hope that niche is catered to...

I think the real question is why it's always a mysterious smartphone app full of microtransactions.

Where I do agree with the anime side being creepy I don't think all forms of Japanese media that revolve around hypnosis are creepy. A lot of JAVs that involve hypnosis have a more fun and playful tone when it comes to hypnosis. One of my favourite irl hypno JAV studios is Traumaart. Despite the creepy name the studio makes really fun and silly hypnosis videos which I love. Downside is getting ahold of a full video by them is difficult due to them only selling in Japan.

I will admit that Traumaart is one of the better Japanese hypno content providers. However, some of their content is...weird, and not in a good way. Example: youtu.be/PyeoWpt7L4c?t=1m20s Also, sometimes they go too far with eyerolling, and a couple scenes from their videos look like the girls are having seizures.

Is it really culture differences on what is considered hot and what is considered disturbing?

I mean...tbh, western erotic hypno content is also fairly prone to being creepy...

It's funny because that stuff is what I really enjoy. I really like weird things so Trauamaart is perfect for me.

Yeah a lot of it can be a bit uncomfortable.

I think this depends a lot if hypnosis is just a resource for sex or hypnosis is used as a plot point.

I have seen many ovas where if you remove the hypnosis elements the story would almost the same:
>The girl is normal
> She's hypnotized
> She becomes a basic nymphomaniac.

The potential to alter perceptions, convince them that they are something else (animals, maids, etc), triggers, hypnosis sessions, therapy to cure something and many more elements are wasted

Instead we have "Girl 1>" look at my magic gun "> rape> next girl"

You like weird things..?! No! I never would have known! /s :p

All joking aside, Traumaart seems to at least push boundaries of what hypnosis does, and that something that is lost in a lot of Japan's hypnosis visual novels. Like with what IDPet says above, instead of being the focus of the story, it just becomes a plot device/easy wish fulfilment to make up a reason as to why the hot girl is suddenly now within grasp of the protagonist (self-insert). It's lazy writing and is a poor attempt to not write a relationship but rather just having two bland personalities interact with one another.

Damn, I need some of that traumaart stuff in my life, but seems to be an unknown on my usual channels of JAV acquisition

I think the main disconnect between hypnofetishists in the west and in the east is in what they're looking at the fetish for, and that difference is cultural.

In the west there's a fairly heavy emphasis on the hypnosis itself as well as breaking down proud free individuals and reshaping them. There's more individualism - everyone does what they freely choose to do. So some people fantasize about either having that choice taken away or taking it away from others. Why? Because sometimes choice is a burden. Sometimes choice means you'll never get the ideal happiness you dream of because someone didn't choose you. Sometimes freedom and making your own decisions is hard. Sometimes you just want to mindlessly relax or relax someone else. Being truly free and individual and unique all the time is exhausting, so it makes sense that the idea of giving that up resonates with some people.

In Japan however there are a LOT of rules and I feel their fetishes express a fantasy where they are free of them. Instead of sucking it up and saving face you get the power to do anything you want. So you use it to do everything you want. If that means being rapey, well, it's rapey. If it's just a fantasy it's harmless.

But the two communities simply come at it from different angles. Some want a magic power that lets them go on a sexual rampage. Some want mind happy hypnofuntimes in real life with a consensual partner. Both types exist in both communities but the ones that want the magical power and freedom from rules are most common in Japan and the ones that get off on restrictive rules being put on free people are most common in the west. It should be no mystery why.

I think the idea is often that they are portrayed as creepy/disgusting because that's why they *need* mind control. It's got a reasonable logic to it, but there are plenty of anime characters who are written to be highly skilled, brave, intelligent and powerful while also being losers who can't get a date.

So, it creates a real disconnect when specifically mind controller protagonists are made to be the worst in every way. If a person can be a loser without actually being a loser in every other scenario, it makes it even more noticeable when the person in this scenario is made out to be literally the worst ever so often.
