Oscar 2019 thoughts
what do you all think of the 2019 Oscar nominees.

as of my thoughts.... holy shit a non ghibli anime film got nominated. its probably gonna loose to spiderman (which frankly does deserve the award).
everything else seems like what you would expect

See, my worry is that it's gonna end up going to Incredibles 2 or, God forbid, Ralph Breaks the Internet. There's been articles put out every year that talk about how Oscar voters often don't watch even a fraction of what they vote on, and animation gets hit by this problem the hardest. A lot of voters seemingly just ask their kids/grandkids what movie they liked and vote for that, which means only the biggest animated movies tend to win. Spider-Verse, as phenomenal and critically-acclaimed as it is, didn't actually do particularly well at the box office, grossing considerably less than Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet.

If everyone who voted actually cared about animation, Spider-Verse would easily take the award based on craft alone. But a lot of voters don't care about animation, and if they're just going based off what they've heard about, then Incredibles 2 is the far more likely choice. Which sucks, since I didn't think Incredibles 2 was particularly good, especially in comparison to Spider-Verse, but then the Oscars always do a bunch of really stupid stuff.

Getting back on topic, my only hope is that the "no dedicated host" thing means that they don't waste time doing stupid skits. The last couple were basically ruined by Kimmel harassing random people for our "amusement."

Infinity War or Spiderverse should've been the Marvel movie in Best Picture, not Black Panther

Ever since 'A Silent Voice' lost to 'Boss Baby', the oscars have been more of a joke to me than before.

Because the line up this year is rather lackluster save for a few exceptions (to those upset with Black Panther being nominated for Best Picture: Suck it the fuck up, none of you nerds even pay attention to this crap unless your cape shit is involved), I will instead go over my choices in the respective categories from films I've seen this year. From the top:

Best Picture: Hereditary.
Best Director: Panos Cosmatos, Mandy.
Best Actor: Matt Dillon, The House That Jack Built.
Best Actress: Toni Collette, Hereditary.
Best Supporting Actor: Hugh Grant, Paddingon 2.
Best Supporting Actress: Andrea Riseborough, Mandy.
Best Original Screenplay: Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal, Blindspotting.
Best Adapted Screenplay: Armando Iannucci, David Schneider and Ian Martin, The Death of Stalin.
Best Documentary: Morgan Neville, Won't You Be My Neighbor?.
Best Animated Feature: Mamoru Hosoda, Mirai.
Best Cinematography: Benjamin Loeb, Mandy.
Best Original Score: Christopher Willis, The Death of Stalin.
Best Make-Up: Overlord.
Best Sound Mixing: Annihilation.
Best Sound Editing: Overlord.
Best Original Song: When A Cowboy Trades His Spurs For Wings, The Ballad of Buster Scruggs.

man, I've seen absolutely none of those...but then again, I hardly watch a lot of movies; Bumblebee, Deadpool 2, and Jurassic World 2 were the only 2018 movies I recall watching, only 2/3 of them in theaters

but of those, I'd support Won't You Be My Neighbor just for it being about Mr. Rogers, such is the appeal of Fred Rogers

You should probably fix that. BTW, the Mr. Rogers doc premieres on HBO and PBS on the 9th.

The hostless oscars this year along with the mooted effort to add a "blockbuster" category shows that Hollywood knows the show is on the ropes for social relevance.

I'm not opposed to the idea, I like the idea of experts in the field leading the voting, the setup just needs some reform. If it were up to me, I'd make it so that you can only vote in the categories that you have credits in. Only actors vote for best actor/actress and supporting, only people with writing credits vote for the writing awards, only folks with a credit on an animated movie can vote in that category. Make it more objective and less about the academy trying to metaguess what will be the best look on them.

What's really stupid about that "best popular film" idea was that the Oscars literally already tried to fix this issue like a decade ago. They used to only nominate 5 films for Best Picture, but in 2009 there was a huge outcry because The Dark Knight and Wall-E got shafted. So in 2010, they expanded the category to a maximum of 10. But then they kept nominating the exact same kinds of films they always did, even when they couldn't find enough to fill out the entire roster. Last year there were only 8 films nominated for Best Picture, same with this year. They're so reluctant to nominate non-Oscarbait films that they literally refuse to fill out the most important category of the whole event.

Not to mention their ridiculously stingy rules towards VOD movies. It's amazing that they were able to budge and give in to Netflix but other films out there that VOD flicks still struggle even if they are critical darlings.
