Recently when browsing posts I've noticed that the comment sections only appear for a split second before disappearing. At first I thought this might be related to one of my privacy addons but I don't recall changing the settings related to this site recently and the problem persisted even after disabling them. I can still browse /comment without issues, it's just the comment sections within posts that are doing this.

I tried doing a page inspection to see if that would help. There were a few errors related to blocked ads and a couple warnings related to elements with duplicate IDs. uMatrix also reports a shitload of scripts and frames being run from google.com and when I finally managed to find the comment sections in the inspector there was something that looked like google captcha in there. I don't know if that helps.

I did a bit of poking around with the inspector and apparently the comments div has the display:none flag in it, which hides the entire section and unhides it if it's disabled. No clue why it's there.

The Captcha bit is because of the fact that comments now require solving a Captcha.

No idea on why the comments would be disappearing mid page load, though.

Is there a box below instead of comments, containing the tags of the picture? You may have hit "Edit" at some point. It doesn't change back to the comments for every picture you view afterwards, until you hit the other thing again. "Respond", it says. Right below the picture.

I've done that before and was too proud to find help >.> Took me months to find how to fix it.

yeah if you pressed edit you have to press respond to get comments back.

There wasn't a box below, but hitting Respond made the comments visible again. Thanks.
