Probably a dumb question but what is a VPN?

Virtual private network... basically it builds a tunnel between your source and the vpn server so you can communicate to a remote server/network securely, Used to get around several things like country blocks because the server does the request for you. Then sends info back to you encapsulated.

Nord vpn is the only one I can think of right now.

I've been using ExpressVPN and am quite satisfied with it, but I'm no expert so I don't know if there are better options. PrivateVPN was also one I used for a while and that I found decent. NordVPN, mentioned above, has a pretty decent reputation, but I've not used it so I can't vouch for it.

For free VPNs I've tested, there's the free open-source SoftEtherVPN, which, although it's (obviously, being a free service) not as good or doesn't offer as many options as some of those paid ones, still decent in a pinch. Another free one I've found pretty good is Hola VPN Proxy, which pretty much serves the sufficient purpose of enabling you to bypass geographical limitations on most websites and is an easy-to-install extension for Chrome (it also works in Opera with the right add-ons, don't know about Firefox).

ExpressVPN, though, is still to my knowledge one of the only ones that consistently manages to bypass Netflix's restrictions, so it's probably the most useful for me personally.

Careful with VPNs right now. A bunch of them have been hacked lately, and snooping code snippets have been injected into a lot of the servers some of them run on. Nord VPN is still dealing with that, and lots of people have lost trust in them. (The snooping stuff captures a variety of data types, but more worrisome would be credit card info).
I don't use a VPN, but considering all the drama going on surrounding them, I think I'll wait to sign up for one. They're awesome in concept, but surprising nobody, even they aren't taking security as seriously as they should. Most of them, that is. Some of them are more secure and cool than others, but they still have issues right now.

EDIT:
Just remembered that PIA and TunnelBear had issues of their own in recent past. I don't recall if it was selling data or data breaches or what, but... They fell out of favor with a lot of fellow techies I know.

My choice is [redacted by staff]. This VPN was recommended to me by my friend. He immediately told a couple of features of this service. One of them is multiplatformity. I can use this VPN on 10 devices at once, regardless of the platform. Whether it's Windows, IOS, or android, it doesn't matter.

I use private internet access. It was recommended to me by a couple of anons i used to speak to. NordVPN WAS good until they decided to wait 6 months before telling people their servers were compromised and everyones private data was leaked

I've been using PIA as well to generally good effect.
