Looking for advice: Mental Block Wiki
I'm thinking of getting back into the Mental Block Wiki ( mental-block.wikia.com ) a bit more.

One of the perks of the Wikia system is the badge system. The more you contribute to the Wiki, you earn fun little badges that appear on your profile page. You can even customize them!

That's where you come in. I want to customize all the badges to have an MC flair based off of iconic scenes. So far, I've got badges based on Kaa, Mezmerella, Oban Star Racers, Scooby-Doo (The Ghost Clown), and Steven Universe (the Arcade Mania episode).

What other scenes from anime, manga, cartoons, or comics would you say are iconic? I can list all the badges you can earn here if that'd help.

I'd say the pokemon hypno is a pretty iconic hypno fetish mascot.

hypnotoad

Hey, that sounds pretty neat. Maybe we could do a badge thing for this site to encourage people to maintain tags?

Am I a bad person if I only consider 2 of those to be iconic scenes? I've never even seen the other 3.

No, not really. "Iconic" is a strong word... I mostly just used whatever screencaps I had on hand.

Yeah Oban is pretty niche (that's the one with the music robot alien thing, right?) I'm on board with Mezmerella, though.

As awesome an idea as that is, I'm not sure that's on the dev's to-do list, and I'm about 6 years behind on PHP and Javascript. :P

It's times like this that make me wish Stem_Cell were still around and that he would have finished his project, Christina, which was to be a platform from which we could create modules for the site safely, turning each one on and off as needed and as they break/if they break. Then I'd try to see if I couldn't find someone to make such a system.

Alas, unless Stem comes back, or another like him does undertakes such a project, it's only a dream.

It looks like from the thread that Christina was just an options page, or perhaps an API for features to have pop-up options like the hover zoom link at the bottom. Not something to turn the features themselves on and off on a site-wide level.

Not that you can't do that! A full plugin system sounds way too heavyweight to me (it arguably represents a larger bug hazard than any plugin that would ever be written for this particular site), but a nice agile approach if you want to be suspicious of a new feature is to refactor the part it touches as a <<en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strategy_pattern|strategy pattern>> so a simple config setting can instantly turn it on and off without restarting anything. Of course this only makes sense if the new feature is dramatic enough that the refactor to strategy pattern is less bug-prone than the feature itself, just like with the plug-in idea.

Or you could just stop being so terrified of end-user content being broken for brief periods since this isn't an enterprise product and it's not a big deal.

For the record, adding a little badge or something to users based on tag edit count represents roughly minimum possible risk - if that's conceptually too risky, I assure you that so is Christina, even if Stem_Cell is a senior programmer at Google.

Stem and I talked about it a little more in depth before he disappeared. He intended it to be much more than something like that. He was practically coding a backend for future unofficial modules, though I'm not sure how I described it is exactly how it was going to work. He had sunk SO MANY hours into it.
