Cappy is a ghost in the form of a top hat. Cappy helps Mario defeat Bowser during super_mario_odyssey|Super Mario Odyssey as Bowser has not only kidnapped princess_peach|Princess Peach, but he also kidnapped Cappy's sister Tiara_(mario)|Tiara.
Cappy allows Mario the ability to "Cap-ture" just about anything from enemies to inanimate objects and even people (in some very limited instances). The "Cap-ture" ability allows Mario to possess the thing he has "cap-tured", giving Mario full control over them.
