Why do I feel like this was the work of the Company?
That's generally what I'm going for

The phrase "timing is everything" is particularly true in our line of work. Proper timing can make all the difference between picking up a mind that is steeled and primed for resistance versus sweeping up a vulnerable and malleable mind. See here. Lyndis of Elibe, swordswoman from the plains, is a classic example of the importance of timing. Across the connected multiverse she's popular, recognizable and desirable, yet those found in most universes are generally too strong willed and independent for our purposes, practically the perfect example of what we don't want in a subject. But if one were to strike when the time is right, when her life has just been upheaved, and suddenly things become much easier, her mind more malleable. Such a subject would be less questioning of strangers come to rescue her, less critical of their intentions, and most importantly, less questioning of the strange screens they have her gaze into for hours at a time... or of how calm and peaceful those screens make her feel... docile and blank.
After such a point procedures become rather routine. Soon enough her thoughts of revenge start to fade, and she'd find that she's happier for it, her drive turning towards other things. Soon enough she starts to dream of settling down, of finding just the right man... one whom will take care of her... very good care of her. One she can obey and serve and become his perfect wife. Whereas before her strong will would lead her towards the hardened steel path of the blade, now it will fuel very different kinds of passions.
Indeed, “Timing is everything."
