Annette just smiled at Bernadetta. “I don’t know what you mean, Bernie.”
“Everyone’s… they’re different.” Bernadetta said. “Mercedes… Ingrid… Everyone’s… it’s subtle… but they’re all… it’s all revolving around you.” Bernie swallowed. “They all follow you.”
Annette just kept smiling. “It’s only natural for a leader to step up in times of stress and conflict. I’m simply filling a role that needs to be filled.”
“I’ve seen it.” Bernadetta finally said. “I’ve seen what you do to them… What you have them do to each other.”
Annette shook her head, obviously still trying to play Bernie for a fool. “I don’t know what you-”
“You use a lot of chains.” Bernadetta said. “You put Catherine in them… Lysithea had Leonie in them… H-Hilda wrapped Hapi in them…”
There it was. That dangerous glint in her eyes.
“Hapi was enchanted ropes, actually.”
Bernie swallowed. “And now you’ve finally come for me.”
“If you’ve been watching so closely, then I’m sure you know how this goes.” Annette said, motioning Petra closer. “Don’t worry, Bernie. Everyone likes the improvements I make. I’m sure you will, too.”
Bernie bit her lip. “Will you make me more like you?”
Annette blinked, and her mouth hung open. She was speechless. Did she…
“Do… do you *want* this?” Annette finally asked.
“Only… only because it’s you.” Bernie said.
Annette began to realize for the first time that perhaps Bernie’s fluster around her hadn’t been her normal brand of anxiety. Bernadetta had a crush on her. Probably since their academy days, if her memory served her well.
Annette smiled, trying to regain control of the situation. “You don’t *really* want my improvements, do you Bernie? All you really want is a place at my side.”
“Goddess, yes.” Bernie half-sighed, half-moaned.
For the second time today, Annette found herself rendered speechless by Bernadetta’s demeanor.
While she was still recovering, Bernadetta closed the distance between them, and grabbed Annette by her shoulders. “Please.” She squeezed. “Take me. Make me yours.”
Something in Annette’s head finally clicked in place, and, with a smile, her hand stroked Bernie’s cheek as the glamour fell away, revealing the slick black material of her Agarthan outfit. “Oh Bernie… You’re already mine.”
