I really don't keep up with MTG anymore. It's expensive to collect new cards to stay competitive. One card that makes nearly any deck better as long as it's available (Since MTG only keeps the most recent sets released valid for tournament play) is the Loxodon Warhammer.
It's an artifact, so you can use any mana for it, and it is relatively cheap. It costs 3 mana to play it, then 3 mana to equip it so you just might not be able to play it and equip it on the same turn early in the game.
It gives a pretty nice +3 attack boost which can make even a lone saproling into a hard hitter. Trample means that whatever you throw it on cannot simply be blocked by a throwaway 1/1 token creature. And Lifelink gives you at least 3 HP back every turn you attack.
Since you can use the equip ability after your battle phase though, if you have the extra mana to burn you can equip it to one of your blockers at the end of your turn so that you can get even more healing from blocking your opponent's attack (or intimidate your opponent into not attacking)
oh the only most recent sets thing is standard. now theres modern /legacy modern is 8th edition and up so none of the cards rotate out the only worry is baning of cards ie tressure cruise was made in kahns 7and 1 blue casting cost delve [exile cards in graveyard to pay for 1 generic] draw 3 cards
it got banned fast in every format but standard because ppl dubbed it the next ancestral recall [which made modern delver decks over 50% of meta for a while after the ban pod became a big portion of the meta birthing pod got banned then it became podless pod with the birth of a card called collected company [also pauper is good format cause its only cards that has been printed as common so a tier 1 deck cost 20-60$ compared to standard tier 1 deck witch can cost 300-1000$
