I finally managed to snag Pirates of the Caribbean 3 to tape this weekend so I can finally rewatch it after almost a decade. Ironically (given the context and even title of the movie), it's like this flick fell off the face of the earth one day. I'm staying at my parent's house for a couple months, and they have a massive dvd collection - a copy of Pirates 1, two copies of Pirates 2, Pirates 4...but nary a 3 in sight. I know the movie was pretty bad, but not nearly bad enough that it shouldn't exist ^^

I also randomly sat through Inherent Vice the other night. I know this might seem like a base and obvious comparison to make, but...something about Joaquin's voice in the movie, and the plot revolving around a fading stoner caught in an overly-elaborate web of mystery with whacked-out characters, it really felt like a spiritual, less-funny predecessor to the Big Lebowski, or rather the Dude taking a PI job after the 60's ended, or...something. I'm still not sure how I feel about the movie, but I definitely don't consider it wasted time.

And for all the hypnogals out there, it's not exactly hypno fetish, but there's a very interesting scene where Joaquin's main squeeze talks in very slow, erotic tones about how great it felt for her to basically be dressed up like a doll and paraded around like property by her rich lover.

Just watched Hero (2002) also known as Fabulous Martial Arts: The Movie. It's a really nice Wuxia film, the action, the story and the beautiful aethetic really makes this one of my favorites movies in recent memory.

I got to see Two Guns again on tv today. That is a pretty good movie.

EDIT:

Another amazing movie that I saw was Kung Fury. It's only about half an hour but it is amazing.

Just watched Krampus. Good movie if you consider that it's meant to be a dark comedy and not a supernatural horror movie.

That said, the climax and ending REAAAAAAAAALY descend into legit horror. Like "twist the thing you cherish and wish for into your own prison and little bit of hell" kind of horror. If it weren't for that and a few other parts, this movie would be forgettable. I'd say it's just "cult classic" status.

I think the last movie I watched was Full Metal Jacket, so I'll just drop that here even though it wasn't too recent

Who's the leader of the club that's made for you and me?

I watched Now You See Me for the first time tonight. I'd hadn't seen it yet because the trailers made it look like a giant circlejerk of well-paid actors whose characters are somehow ALL awesome, like Oceans 18 or something.

I wasn't wrong but it was at least reasonably entertaining.

Just got back from Suicide Squad. Pretty good. ANYTHING is better than BvS at this point. Well, cept Fant4stic. Or the pre-Blade Marvel movies. Or Man-Thing. Fuck Man-Thing.

Point is, I liked it. Not sold on Leto, but the cast was good. Will Smith was playing Will Smith, but it wasn't the worst. I'd watch it again.

Did you get to watch the Ultimate Cut of BVS? I've heard it's a substantial improvement of what ended up in theaters.

Speaking of superhero movies, I decided to watch Unbreakable again after how Suicide Squad is being knocked around and a review I read for that film that dismissed the genre as a whole, saying it was never good in the first place. Man, that guy needs to watch Unbreakable cause this is still the best thing the genre has ever put out. What a majestic film. The music alone inspires awe. But the respect it brings to the material, despite not based on one, is incredible.

I did a found-footage horror movie double-header the other night: [REC] and [REC] 2. I have a sort of soft spot for the found-footage horror genre even though a lot of terrible movies come out of there, but these two movies just knock it the fuck out of the park. The second one is actually better than the first one in my opinion, something you rarely see nowadays. Plus they put a nice (and very needed) twist on the concept of zombie contamination. If you don't mind movies with subtitles I recommend 'em. :)

Those films are fucking terrifying, especially the second one imo.

Heck yeah they are! The part in the first one when they were hiding from that THING in the apartment--I was literally holding my breath the entire time. Such well done horror!

Just came out of suicide squad and was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. Joker sucked in it tho.

Yeah. Not helped by the fact I saw it straight after the thing Hamill has practiced forever.

Got out of Star Trek Beyond. Fantastic film that finally manages to mix action with intelligence and a strong message that we really need nowadays.
