Just got back from Kubo.

Only one in the room.

My eyes should tell you all, but:
"FUCK THIS LOOKS GOOD"
"The one has smoke, and I expect Yuu-Chan art"
"UNNNNNNNNNF"
"Ah"
"Oh"
"OHHHHHHHHHHH"
"oh"
"Damn. What a fucking good movie. Fuck me, I'm at he brink of crying here."
*While my guitar gently weeps starts*
*Bittersweet tears*

Go. Watch. Now.

I stayed for the end credits. All through. Not because of waiting for some kind of special surprise after credits scene or something, but because I felt the folks at Lakia deserved a moment of appreciation.

I'mma resurrect this thread to share with you all the film I watched yesterday: Westworld. It's a film about an amusement park/resort containing recreations of several time periods, populated with lifelike robots. It's a rather unusual film, but I enjoyed it. Also they've just started airing a TV series based on it.

That movie is fucking terrifying. Yul Brynner in that movie is the stuff of nightmares.

As for myself, I did a double bill of Ant-Man and Midnight Special with a friend. The former turned out to be a pleasant surprise for me while the latter is probably the best movie I've seen this year so far.

Just got back from Finding Dory and Trolls (Thank you, Limitless~)

Dory was great, not as good as Nemo, but one of the better sequels.

Trolls was surprisingly not shit. Besides looking spectacular, it doesn't really do anything to piss me off (sans butcher Clint Eastwood), so I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but if you got money, give it a shot.

Some movies I watched recently were guardians of the galaxy, and Back to School with Rodney Dangerfield

I binged a weekend's worth of mediocre summer blockbusters that I missed (I say 'mediocre' because I did get off my ass and go see good-looking movies like Civil War and Jungle Book in the theatres).

BvS - not too bad. Dark Knight Returns is one of the few comics I've actually read, and while I appreciated all the little nods and ported lines, it felt really weird that they lifted so much material from it (being an endgame story) in order to kickstart their cinematic universe. Beginning with the ending was pretty bizarre, and leaves a disjointed feeling in which they're trying to tell bits and pieces of several different stories that don't always mesh well; kind of like adapting ASoIaF into Game of Thrones, the writers can't change the roads they take and always expect to arrive at the same destination. Other than that, I enjoyed it. Probably wouldn't watch again.

Suicide Squad - probably the worst movie I watched during the binge. Just a mess, and I can't say I was really entertained by it at any point. Honestly the first and only thing that comes to mind when I think back on it is the weird cha-cha'ing supervillainess. BvS just barely gets a pass for having no humor - while SS has a touch of it, there's really no excuse for them going way more grimdark than they should have. Flashy style is no substitute for humor when you've got a cast as potentially colorful as this.

Ghostbusters - a pretty solid 'meh.' Wasn't as bad as it could have been. The main girls were fairly likable as characters if not particularly funny. Sadly, the agenda was in about as full-swing as it could be while just barely maintaining a membrane of subtlety; there wasn't a male character in the movie that wasn't a wimp, a jerk, or a moron. But apart from a few cringey lines ('safety lights are for boys'), it was bearable and got more than a few chuckles out of me. Still, it doesn't do much for the franchise's longevity when the supporting characters get more laughs than the leads, with or without agenda.

TMNT Out of the Shadows - probably my favorite movie I watched that day. I avoided the first one because it didn't seem worth the time, but rumor had it that this one was an improvement. Too many live action comic / superhero movies put realism first, campiness second; everything from Bebop and Rocksteady to the Party Wagon shooting manhole cover missiles shows a loving embrace of cartoonishness that really makes this one stand out from the usual blockbusters. Not a phenomenal movie, but definitely an enjoyable one.

Saw three movies over the course of the weekend:

On Friday, I watched The Wailing, a Korean horror flick about a town being haunted by foreign guest. And man, it's a doozy. While long as shit and having some confusing plot elements (especially the ending), this contains one of the most haunting stories I've seen in a movie in quite a while. Solid acting and dreadful atmosphere all around. It's just came out on DVD and Blu-Ray, so it shouldn't be too hard to check out. It's not an easy sit, but completely worth it.

Then on the same day (and finishing it up on Saturday morning), I also watched Batman v Superman, specifically the Ultimate Edition (albeit through less than legal means). And I have never seen a movie that was equal parts a failure yet a slam dunk. For every bad thing(haphazard storytelling in the first two acts, Jesse Eisenberg's Lex Luthor, inconsistent pacing, clunky character motivations, too many subplots), something good pops up (fantastic cast, gorgeous visuals, excellent score, exhilarating action and a balls to wall third act). It's easily Zack Snyder's weakest movie. Not a disaster but not a masterpiece like others proclaim that it is.

Finally, I went to the theater with a friend today and saw Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children. And despite some major flaws, I had a blast with it for the most part. It takes a while for it to get cooking, with a slow moving first act and a really bland protagonist. But once the main villain enters the picture, it becomes a delightfully kooky adventure. It's easily one of Tim Burton's better movies in recent memory, with a colorful cast, good style, a lovely score and an interesting if dense mythology behind it. Plus it has Eva Green in it and that woman can do no wrong, even if the movie is bad.

While it may not be a movie in the strictest sense, I just introduced a group of people to the series <<www.youtube.com/watch?v=A...p;list=PLBC84A55C38AEFDC4|There Will Be Brawl.>> An interesting live action film noir twist on the Nintendo IP mashup that is/was Super Smash Bros Brawl. Apparently this was a lot less popular than I thought, so I figured I'd mention it here and see if I was the only one that remembered desperately trying to figure out who the Butcher was.

I watched it a few years ago and have to say it was shocking how good it was and the ending may have been one of the best twist I've seen in a long time.

The final one with Kirby escaping Hannibal Lecter style was extra creepy

I'm a huge Doctor Strange fan, and the visuals alone would have me hooked.

Just got back from watching Kizumonogatari 2 at the Leeds international film festival and it was amazing! The adaptation wasn't as perfect as I hoped with a lot of dialogue from the 3 vampire hunters being cut which did make them come off as 1 note and less fleshed out than the book and some important foreshadowing dialogue was missing which was kinda disappointing but other than that it exceeded my expectations especially the fight scenes. Im glad they made the fights longer and more dynamic which made it worth watching on the big screen. The comedy was also on point with the whole cinema laughing during the Hanekawa and Araragi scenes and still has some great visual gags that fits the style of the show to a tee. The music was also great too with the stand out being the music used at the start of the Episode fight which was a reappearance of the music from the very first Kizu trailer that came out years ago but made a little more epic. As a film it's about a 9/10 and as an adaptation it would be about a 7.5/10.
