Movies that shocked you
There's lots of vidya threads here right now, and I thought we could mix it up a bit with a movie thread.
What are films that shocked you the first time you watched them? I don't mean 'shocked' as in surprised you with having a crazy plot twist, or by bringing up provocative ideas or concepts (though both of these things can be relevant to the shock material). I mean, what are films that had moments, segments or entire acts that broke your expectations for the film and pushed boundaries by being frightening, dark, twisted, or outright horrifying?
Try to use spoiler bars where applicable.
For me, the most notable instance of this had to be last year's The Hateful Eight (a film which literally no one in the entire universe saw, apparently, even though it had a wide release). I love Tarantino films, especially his Westerns/Western-influenced movies. Obviously, that said, I'm no stranger to his affinity for horribly dark scenarios and crazy gore, and went into this film knowing it would have some of his trademark carnage. I wasn't ready. This film gets absolutely fucked. The most disturbing scenes tread the fine line between black comedy and horror, and are made even harder to watch by the retro-styled Ennio Morricone orchestral score. There were multiple points where the entire theater audience vocally cringed at what was happening. I'd credit that not only to the violence, but just how tense the atmosphere is throughout the entire movie, like anyone could do something drastic at any time.
"You'd be surprised what someone that cold would do for a blanket."
"You wanna know what your boy did?"
