Basically, within the settings interface for his "Realm" (which for all intents and purposes is a server that's hosted by Mojang...), PenKen has an option for adding specific Minecraft Usernames to the whitelist. When he adds someone, that person receives an notice on
their Realms menu of a "Pending Invite". By accepting that invite, said (invited) player is added to (what I'll call) the
"active" whitelist (the list of invited people who
can join due to having accepted the invite.) To check pending invites, you click the icon of a fancily-sealed letter on the Realms menu.
