If we reach a point where a device can "add a narritive" and make you believe it to be valid, how would democracy work? Nobody would be able to be sure thier opinions are theirs or were put there by someone else.

That's exactly our problem. And why we need to make sure to fix the system before shit like this becomes feasible.

Also, I'd like to assume everybody here watched Dollhouse because if you didn't, man, you're missing out. It's exactly this subject matter and portrayed in a way that's almost fetishistic.

And by the way, if this tech becomes real before we guillotine the fuck out of the current corporate plutocrats, you're not going to be notified before it's used. Scary thought.

I've stopped trusting the intentions of the US a while ago. This technology is far too easy to misuse, I read up somewhere that the transcranial magnetic stimulation can disrupt one's moral process if timed properly, I only think of how they can use the army against the people, considering the ALLEGED change in the military doctrine I've heard of from my father during one of our discussions, in which the US now condones using military force against its civilians. I've also heard that the US doesn't mind using drones to spy on people. I don't mean to come off as a conspiracy theorist preaching the end of the world, but i find it rather scary what I'm hearing.

OH BOY REVOLUTION URG MY FANTASIES OF OVERTHROWING THE GOVT MMMM

That'll work out just as smashingly as the last 10,000 revolutions to End Corrupt Gov't and Give Power To The People and whatever other buzzwords you got.

"The system" is not broken. Humans are.

Nonsense. The system is, too, broken. It's broken because humans are a key factor in the system.

Did you ever heard about that thing called "history"?

All systems start as a replacement of an older system. The current shape of the U.S. started from great ideas from great people, who changed the way things were and made them better. It's all long due for another change, which will happen in one way or another. The current system is just broken because humanity as a whole now knows better.

Also, if you honestly think the system is not broken and humans are the problem, feel free to go and fix your share of the issue.

How one can claim that humans are broken; yet can insist that a system designed by these broken humans could possibly be unbroken after a couple hundred years is baffling.

Also, how can some people say things were better "back in the day"?? Granted, I'm not old enough to know if they were, but history is there to tell me they weren't.

Humans are awesome. Humanity is a great thing. We could do without the fuckers but all in all, we're getting there, aren't we?

Not fast enough to avoid killing ourselves through willful ignorance of the effects we have on the world and others around us, and of just how reliant we are on the environment and other people most consider "beneath" themselves.

There. You ruined my motivational bullshit.

In any case, life penalizes those who are idiots. The next generation has always been smarter than the last one (at least on average), so in the end we should have something workable, maybe by this century.

I mean, isn't Iceland scolding their banksters, Uruguay suddenly producing first-world legislation and some arab guys fighting their dictators?

I think we're getting there. Not intact, though, but we weren't ever intact to begin with :P

I believe humanity will not survive another 200 years at this rate, People need a common goal to put an end to the chaos, we simply don't have one. Our countries are working against each other for resources, revenge, power, hubris, etc. All we can hope for is global unification, the next messiah, arrival of aliens, or something else in my completely honest opinon.

Honestly I disagree. Our current generation seems to be actually rewarding stupidity with money and fame. While I believe humanity to have mostly good intentions we've really missed the mark with our current love of dumb celebrities and social media crazes.

Thought I'd randomly throw this in here, since I just saw it earlier today, is somewhat on topic. and makes this situation somehow seem even worse.
