I really wanted to do something involving a Malamar but couldn't figure out a good way to do it, so instead have non-specific tentacles from off screen.

I'd say its the character designs as well, there's a lot of good ones this gen.

I have to say, just the basic NPC trainer designs have been surprisingly compelling (Lass, Ace Trainer, Furisode Girl, Hex Maniac, etc) this time around. I suspect it might have something to do with them getting character portraits instead of tiny sprites, actually.

True, I never thought I'd see so much art of an NPC with Hex Maniac. I think having a larger cast of 'rivals' who do more than just show up and challenge you ever now and then helped a lot too.
