It just seems weird to Blackface a character like May, instead of Hilda who never appeared in the anime.

"Blackface" refers to painting a non black person's face for the purpose of performance and mockery. This guy just seems to like the skin tone.

It could be like in battle revolutions case where in japan two gym leaders origianlly had light skin
but when the game was brought to the states they changed they skin to dark.
