Viego, the ruined king, returned at full strenght to Runeterra, starting to mind control many of the primary characters with his mist. Riot even confirmed that the ruined skins of Karma, Draven and Shyvana are canon.

Does it count also as possession, or is it separate from his in-game abilities?

It's hard to say, to be honest, but I would lean more on not. According to the lore for Karma: - "Surviving the initial ruination of Ionia, Karma is ultimately lost during a second one led by Viego himself. With the Spirit of Ionia itself removed from the continent, the Ionian people must band together to save one another, even as Karma twists the souls of millions to a new, horrific purpose." And for Shyvana - "Shyvana's ruination brings newfound darkness, as well as clarity. Turning swiftly against Demacia for its persecution of magic, and sinking into her more draconic emotions, she appears as an avenging beast of old, ready to topple Demacia for its ignorance." From what I can read with also Draven's lore, it sounds more like corruption that possession. If we also want to add some more theory, Viego "possessing" others would be a colossal way to catch the attention of Mordekaiser (who is the ultimate master of control over the spirits, and one of the most powerful figures of Runeterra), an entity Viego itself will, most likely, avoid to piss off so soon.

His cinematic features him mind controlling Darius completely, attacking Karma with his mind magic and getting some people. As LordVrane pointed out, it could be more so possesion, but his in-game abilities are probably made like that so you can't use 2 champs at a time
Very unlikely, since in the cinematic it was shown how the champions broke free from Viego control... but then again, they were also not changed in their appearance during the first wave.

I'm honestly surprised it took so long for the community to react to such a direct MC change in lore xD
wait, what happened?
