I wish I was updating my Raya pic, but while I was looking through my Disney brown girls folder, I found this little image stitch of Moana's blink-and-you'll-miss-it parts when she's under Maui's spell.

Here are the two best frames, IMO, of Moana when she's under Maui's illusion. The frame where Moana completely buys into the spell, and the half a second she stays in trance in the cave before she snaps out of it.

I would argue that this is more a case of awe than explicit MC, but the way you set up the screenshots and your comment make a very convincing case.

I would have said so as well in a cursory watch of the scene, but I went frame by frame for the cave part, and Moana's eyes go from glazed to awake. Maybe I'm projecting a bit, but I feel that it's at least a 50/50 chance that this is a hypno scene, especially once she started interacting with Maui's illusion food/trash and the aforementioned blank eyes in the cave, and probably better than 50% honestly.

I've gone back and forth about this myself. The part where random rocks and such turn into food definitely seems like hypnosis, but on the other hand, that also seems like a "Disney Magic" trope where unexplained stuff happens during musical numbers. I feel like he's more getting her carried away in the energy of what he's saying temporarily (he is a trickster, not a hypnotist), but it's honestly up to interpretation.

I’d like to throw in my two cents into the hypnosis/trickery/enthusiastic argument. It’s been a little bit sense I saw the movie but I seem to recall she had to look at the stuff to realize it was rocks. If it was illusion she would have realized the second she opened her eyes and saw no bright colors. If enthusiasm she would have been confused why he put seaweed around her neck. If “musical magic” they would revert to non cardboard variants or simply vanished. So it’s probably hypnosis to some degree. Possibly hypnosis to make ignore obvious signs that she’s in an illusion or increase her gullibility.

I really don't see this as hypnosis, at best it is illusions, but it is more likely Disney Musical Magic as edcellwarrior stated.

Firstly there is no difference in her eyes from the second picture and when she "breaks out of the spell". It seems like crazy projecting to me from AWMBH's side. I have tried going frame by frame and I can't see the glazed to awake difference in the cave.

Secondly that snap from musical back to reality happens multiple times in Disney movies. When Simba sings Can't Wait to Be King all the animals goes from tumbling down to have dispersed in seconds. In Mulan they happen to go all the way up to a burned village where the sky is red and black from fire and ash, yet they only realize it when they are right next to it.

I would say as a general rule, Disney have to show hypnosis for there to be hypnosis, all other times it is just too vague and reaching.

Gonna toss this into the debate. My money is on hypnosis too, goven the brief shock she has upon realizing she's holding rocks.

To be fair, hypnosis is a state of mind, not a specific type of magic. You can induce hypnosis using illusions, and if you are a trickster/illusionist getting your target to fall into a state of trance is probably ideal for getting them to follow your routine.

Weighing in, I think it's definitely hypnosis. If it was just the music number, she would be focusing on the words and his last verse is all about taking her boat from her and sailing away and she just smiles happily. Then, when she realizes in the cave, she looks down, is confused, drops the rocks and seaweed, then looks back up and blinks. And you can see with the final blink, before she even turns to the mouth of the cave, that the light returns to her eyes, with no new source of light present. Glazed to alert.
