One of the main reoccurring characters in the first manga, Sniper Mask, has a cracked mask so he has some awareness of his past. Everyone else who has a mask put on them becomes an aimless murderer. As the story goes on, and in the sequel manga, there are more mask types that have different effects on the wearer which allow them some reasoning ability but alter their perception of the world.
