Spoilers tag because there are two small tidbits here that could spoil some (admittedly obvious) plot points from the anime.

I loved this anime so much. <3

Lol, I wish. No, but two of the details in my caption and dialogue are minor spoilers.

There is mention of usage of Hypnosis on Galactic Federation soldiers such as Ledo for the purpose of training and "conditioning", however, it's only lightly touched on once or twice and they never really explain it beyond saying that it happened/is happening.

The spoilers in this manip are...
that Ridget becomes the Captain and that Ledo actually encounters the Hideauze (sort of) while on the Verdant Planet. Neither are huge spoilers, but they are spoilers nonetheless.

That said, I'd recommend you give it a try, anyway. It's a very unique anime that portrays sociology at its finest. It's essentially about how a Galactic Federation soldier, who's also a teenager, crash lands on a planet that can support life (a rarity in this anime) after a large space battle with an alien race. This world is completely covered by water. The people live solely on large makeshift rafts and ships. Ledo and his mech (complete with the AI, Chamber) get found by the members of Gargantia, one of these ships. The entire anime centers around Ledo struggling to deal with the world he just left behind and adapt to his new surroundings.

Of course, many things from his normal life not a few months before his crash landing come back to haunt him...

Even though it's not actually in the anime though, you should watch it.

Suisei no Gargantia was probably my favorite of that season.

(This season it's Gin no Saji)
