these are acting really weirdly. Most of them aren't appearing on either the front page or in the pool but you can still navigate them using the Previous and Next arrows above the picture.

Hmm, they should still appear in the pool. I took 'em off the index to stop them hogging the front posts page, the ones that show there now are the beginning and end of chapters.

I believe all the pics are showing in the pool when I look.

That's actually a problem with pools, apparently. At the bottom of the pool page, click either the "Toggle View" or "Index View" link to change what view format the pool displays using. There are two view types and an index view. One of the view types, the bugged one, has no way to progress through the pages in a pool, the other view type does, and the index view is a post search that results in only images in the pool and works just like tag searches.
