The hive appeared a few weeks ago. Probably another creation of the same mage that's been creating all manner of beasts. However, these ones seemed different than the bloodthirsty mongrels that usually attacked. They were smarter, more organized, and were infinitely more dangerous because of those reasons. They'd already contaminated our food, and turned a dozen or so villagers into more of them. We couldn't even stop them before they stung at least a half dozen others. Now they were all part of the hive.
We managed to capture one as they were fleeing the village, and brought in one of the royal mages. Nothing could change them back. Their very souls had been changed. They lived in service of the hive, and it's enigmatic master. We've since been keeping it for research on ways to counter the hive, and it's been oddly cooperative with our interrogations, if a bit... provacative. It seems to think that even if we were to try anything, all of it would simply fail.
Another fresh adventurer had seen the quest and, wanting to prove his worth against all of our protests that he was way in over his head, left towards the forest where the hive dwelled...
