I looked it up. Apparently, the halos represent the girl's consciousness. They disappear temporarily whenever they're sleeping or unconscious. They're also really mysterious as a concept since there's no clear consensus on exactly how they work. At least, I think that's the gist of it.

Took long enough. I asked it on the clothed version of this, but never got an answer there. But they basically tell you if they're awake or not? Makes it hard to play possum
