I think the general rule is to assume the animal ones are fake when you can see both.

Not really. I would only assume they're fake if you can actually see a hairband that they could be attached to. I think some artists just draw both because they think that having exposed skin on the side of the head without human ears there would look strange. And they're probably right. That's why most artists draw kemonomimis with their hair positioned so that it covers the sides of their heads, leaving it ambiguous as to weather they have ears on the sides of their head or not.

Also, maybe the cat ears in this pic (and others like it) aren't actually functioning ears, but just aesthetic.

Well that's not how people have been tagging, so that's not how I've been tagging. =x

90% or more of images that were already here when I showed up that had both were tagged fake.

Well, I don't know if you've been busy tagging since you made this comment, but looking at the tag, most of the images tagged fake show signs that they are. Also, I should smack you for tagging a couple Reisen pics as fake. Her ears are real. :P

But actually now that we're on the subject I seem to actually remember un-faking a lot of ears. I feel like we (or me and Vanndril) already talked about this and I just forgot.
