I'm pretty sure you actually could rob a bank this way irl these days. All major banks are FDIC insured, so it doesn't actually cost them anything if they get robbed, and thus tellers are trained to just let a potential robber walk out with the money rather than let a risky scenario play out. The onus is then on the FBI to catch the robber afterwards.
