So, the question then is "How many Empresses were Emperors?" And what's so special about the mask and the spirit in it?

The empire has been going for a millennia and at least half of the Empresses were originally princes. The mask's power is that the wearer gains the collective knowledge of all previous Empresses. The spirit is the original Empress, who likes to corrupt the wearer's morals to be what she seems proper (so evil).
