As someone watching a Let's Play of it, I can say that you're probably not getting context until later. I'm only on chapter 2 through. (But there is some form of mind control in chapter 1...)

Without spoilers, yes there are multiple scenes where said character is in a trance like state and seemingly under mind control, but thats not the whole story. Layton Versus Phoenix Wright DOES feature hypnosis but it'd be one hell of a spoiler to even begin explaining how.
