When Pauline had been kidnapped by that giant ape, she was terrified at first. So, to calm her, Donkey Kong tried to appease her with a crystal banana from the nearby jewelry store. From what he had seen, human women liked shiny things.

He tied it to a string and dangled it in front of Pauline, the woman's eyes immediately drawn to the shimmering, beautiful crystal. As it swung back and forth, she found herself helplessly drawn to it. She followed its movements, her fear of the giant ape slipping away, along with any conscious thought.
