Disney's decision to include the mind-controlling Jafar in the same movie as Jasmine is the gift that keeps giving. ^_^
I always thought Jafar's staff was a huge plothole. If he wanted Jasmine, why not just hypnotise her from the start and make her want to marry him? Why even need the lamp when you can get the sultan to do what you want?

I'm guessing the effect faded away more quickly in a strong-willed individual (since even the Sultan could snap out of it momentarily). And if so, it probably would have been exhausting for Jafar to reestablish control many times.

Then why not enslave the guards, have them chain her in the dungeon, and keep hypnotizing her until nothing is left but a smiling sex slave ready to serve her sultan?

Well the lamp would be another powerful magical object to add to his already considerable magical stash. He knows that the Djinni inside is also a gate way to finding more. If he had thought through his wishes better.

True, but he wouldn't even have to do that. He almost did it in the movie, just get the sultan to say 'Jazmine, you're going to marry Jafar' then its done. The reason it never comes up in the movie is 'Jafar just never thought of it before,' really? It's always been a plothole for me...
