Why does Sally have a long tail? She's a chipmunk!
Looks like they were transformed into squirrels since it looks like sonic has a tail too

Why does Sally have a long tail? She's a chipmunk!
Sally is half-squirrel on her father's side. The actual effect this has on her own biology is wildly inconsistent. In the show, she seemed to be some sort of canine rather than a rodent at all, with the showrunners being unclear on what species her and her father were, but they felt like Max was probably a fox.
In the older comics, Sally was actually a hybrid of squirrel and chipmunk, and this was how she was for a while. Then when the future timeline comics (Which were all awful) started, Penders decided that every Mobian is basically a carbon copy of whichever parent they share a gender with, so Sally became a full chipmunk like her mother, and this stuck into the post-reboot comics, where Sally is still a chipmunk even though her mother isn't canon anymore.
This Sally probably has a tail because, according to the artist, these versions of the characters are alternate ones from a world where everyone is a herm. Since her elder brother had a long tail, Sally's long one here is probably one of her "Masculine" features, probably from daddy dearest.

1. I could understand the confusion if the comics didn't say what species her father was!
2. Well, I think that the tiny tail is better because it's not distracting!
3. A different universe? I thought N.I.C.O.L.E wanted sonic and Sally to be her lesbian girlfriends for her empire?
