I headcanon that each intake group recruits at least one person with high a resistance and attitude opposed to mind control, to run interference on their classmates and help slow the inevitable attrition long enough for people to actually start learning before being picked off just by luck or an unfamiliar method. That person probably has the most fun (even if/because they almost always end up falling prey to one of their classmates in the end).
