I prefer the Dashigara 100 interpretation: they have to pay a steep entry fee for the Dead or Alive tournament and most of the fighters can't afford it, so they whore themselves out to wealthy benefactors.

I prefer my theory that the hypnotism engine is so big and require a huge amount of energy it was connected to the volcano to generate island wide mind control. So the explosion in the end of DOA2:EBVB caused by the engine malfunctioning, stopping the bimbofication process and let them escape the island before it explode.
