I'm no Art expert but I do a lot of lineless stuff. The main 2 things you need are Contrast and clean edges (lineart normally gives you this for free). I recommend maybe using another tone and sculpting the edges of the character so they're nice and smooth (this can be a bit time consuming at first though)

Yeah I moved on to Twitter, but it's been hard to recover from the loss of Tumblr. There's plenty of Kass on Twitter (just click the image source of this pic, you'll get link'd there)
