The point of URL shorteners is to obscure the URL you're clicking to. There are ways to check them without clicking, but for most people it's too much effort to do so.
That makes them less trustworthy - since pretty much anything can be behind a shortened/obscured URL. Including a virus, or analysis of information I might not want to give.
Now, fav.me is relatively benign, being exclusive to DeviantArt and thus unlikely to lead to malware - but it's still a Bit.ly-based shortener, which gathers a bunch of analytical data for every click and obscures which specific image it navigates to.
