This is how Metroids work. Anyone that disagrees wasn't reading the encrypted text on Mognar's backside.

(Seriously though, great animation.)

If a part 2 to this happens I really hope Metroids develop wireless controls because otherwise we're gonna run into issues with doorways.

Thanks! Was trying to again set a scene up while getting through to the hypno. Hoping the guy wants a part two as it was interesting to make this one overall.

I have a question. How come Amateurs' posts take up like 84 freakin' MB now but this one is only 24? This has a lot of movements in it too: I'm glad it's not huge size, just wondering.

So, anytime you’re dealing with image files or video files there are a few main things that determine the size of the file: resolution (or how many pixels/squares make up the image), the number of colours used (due to compression, will explain further down), and then the length of the video.

Resolution is a measurement of how many ‘squares’ make up the image. Think of it as making a picture out of Legos. The pieces themselves are quite small and things made from only a few pieces take up little space but as you make larger creations and use more pieces then the space taken by that final product occupies more space but is typically a higher quality. AmateurThrowaway typically uses a higher resolution than me on his GIFs so each individual image is already larger than mine (with me typically matching his resolution on GFY after he upped his resolution to match mine). My 640x360 resolution uses 230,400 squares to make up the image while AT’s less standard resolution of 800x450 uses 360,000 squares. That means each image is made up of 56.25% more squares.

The colours used matter as well, depending on the file format used. JPG, PNG, and MP4 all compress colours down. What that typically means is that the computer will look at the colours used and try to see which ones are similar enough to combine down to just one colour. Since a GIF is limited to a maximum of only 256 colours on screen at one time this happens with almost everything saved in the format and creates what is called banding. To demonstrate, here is the original file: i.imgur.com/Ccp0OVz.jpg and then here is it when saved with only 256 colours like a GIF: i.imgur.com/0m85rpZ.gif . Notice how the faces are no longer smoothly shaded (instead having chunks of only 3-4 shades with clear division between them) and the left side of the background has lost a lot of the grain on the metal. If I save the image with grape-flavoured 2Bs only, then it becomes a bit less harsh since it can focus all 256 colours solely on shading 2B: i.imgur.com/vG2aqKL.gif . Now to relate this back to GIFs, if your set has a lot of background details or you change settings in it then the set of colours can no longer be… reused. Instead the GIF now makes an additional set of colours for the animation. Note, only 256 can be displayed at one time but the GIF itself can store more than 256 total colours. Think of it like having a table with piece of paper on it, with each one representing a colour. When that table is full then the only option to have another set of papers is to get another table which will take up more space in the room. You can have infinite tables so long as your room can fit them inside it but you also can only ever sit at one table. Similar thing with GIFs. So since AT’s recent animations have had multiple settings with changing backgrounds alongside clashing colours on the character’s outfits (Like a blue Aqua outfit and then Kairi’s pink outfit entering) meaning he had to use more tables since more colours were used. This Samus one really only has two settings: the bright, in-light version of the hallway and then the dark version. You might notice the GIF is much darker than the GFY version and that’s because a lot of the reddening of the lighting was toned down to just become pure black to keep the image under that 256 colour limit.

This limit is then affected by the length of the animation/video. I render all of my animations (outside of the 2B fight) at 24 frames per second (24 images show on screen every second). So since the animation of Samus is 640 frames/images it is 26.667 sec long (640 images / 24 since it’s 24 every second). Amateur however renders his animations at a PAL-region framerate of 25 frames per second. So now every second animation has an extra image to ‘remember’ or store. This, alongside the fact this animation is literally 1/3rd the size of AT’s means mine will be much smaller.

Add all of that together and you get one thing: the GIF is an outright lower quality overall than AT’s in general but it is done that way to keep size down (60MB is my personal highest tolerable outside of the 2B fight scene). An easier way to explain this can be seen on YouTube. If your internet speed is slow or weak, it will drop you from 1080p to say 480p since it requires less speed to play a video at a smaller size since it doesn’t need as much data to send a ‘smaller’ video. That, or take a random image you find on the internet, save the thumbnail and then print it off to take up a full page.
