The beginning of this kind of feeds my pet theory that Essence's 'specialty' is maintaining control over multiple people for long periods of time, while Nathan has a harder to resist control that targets fewer people. Meanwhile Gage's puppets aren't fully under his control, but the spirits have total possession of their hosts.
Velvet's ability doesn't appear to be that of a 'standard' vampire, though, and more resembles magic since it's channeled through her hands similarly to the way Essence does.
