Colons are used for marking what category of tag new tags are to be. "character:" for character tags, "artist:" for artist tags, "copyright:" for series names, etc.
As such, attempting to use them within the actual tag part of the tag tells the site to try and put it in a tag category matching what is prior to the colon.
