So, sometimes, people who are close (family, bfs/gfs, spouses, etc.) might have a system of allotting the other a limited number of a certain thing (for example, a limited amount of quiet time, or a limited amount of swapping who does what, etc.). In this case, it appears Essence has given Mute... consent in advance. In other words, if he ever wants to do "something" with her (bow chick-a wow wow), he can trade in one and mind control her. Which is... uh... hmm... well, I'd say it seems flawed and potentially an ethical nightmare, but he has mind control (seemingly the stronger of the two) anyways, so I guess their whole relationship is built on trust. If he wanted to be unethical, he would've done it before now.
